I am forwarding a letter written by my Guruji, Pt. Samair Chatterjee to his students with the news of the death of his Guru, Pt. Shymal Bose.
An exerpt of the letter is as follows:
"Friends,
I wish you a very good morning!
It is not the same with me today. I lost my dear Guruji Pandit Shyamal Bose. He was in his home in Calcutta. This morning (8th morning in Calcutta) at 4 a.m. his heart refused to function any more. He was ok until yesterday and went out shopping with his family. His son Saurav Bose these days lives in Delhi. But, fortunately for him, he was home with his father at that moment.
In 69 years of his life all he new was Tabla and music. Any time we would divert in our conversations, he would unfailingly bring us back to Tabla. His love for Tabla was deep and pure. Every time he mentioned about the maestros, his face would glow even in sickness.
I was extremely fortunate and blessed to have him so close in my life.
Chhandayan is about to publish his duet yet with another maestro Pandit Shankar Ghosh in our fist annual concert in Calcutta in 1986. But, I just missed the opportunity to present it in his hand and see his beautiful smile.
The pride of my life has been the twin towers of my two revered gurujis - Pandit Amalesh Chatterjee and Pandit Shyamal Bose. Today I lost one of them.
