I've been playing tabla for a year now and recently bought a new set. the bass plays fine, but the tabla(5.5 inches) echoes when i play. I mean the sound is fine too but when i play na and tu, it echoes like mad, and sounds like theres sand or something in there. . .i havent really tuned it or anything, i just played it as it is.
will the echo/sandy sound go away as i play more often?
I have tuned it now, the sandy sounds is still there but not as bad as yesterday. Like i said before, when i play na or tu, it echoes alot. it takes about 5 seconds for that ring to go away after i strike na.
is it a cheap tabla or is this how the new ones are? why is it ringing like this?
Sounds like you're talking about syahi buzz. There's an article by David on chandrakantha.com/tablasite that you should check out, on the subject of tabla maintenance and repair.
Most tablas buzz to varying degrees. . I even find it nice sometimes, but generally it's undesirable.
This article is only if i have loose particles which isnt the case, like i said before, i just bought this tabla. its not the bass drum that's ringing, its the right drum. compared to my old tabla, this one doesnt sound anything like it. this one sounds more like playing a BELL, honestly - it rings that much.
should i return it or is there anything i could do?
