Hi there,
Sharda Sahai is one of the most amazing soloists I've heard. His presentation is pure Benares Baj (- He is the gharandar of this school of tabla; a direct descendent of the founder of the gharana - Pt. Ram Sahai). His playing has facets of power, elegance and lyricism. .
I particularly enjoy his recording "Art of the Benares Baj" (available on the Audiorec label) - IMHO it's like rhythmic poetry. From what I understand, he focuses almost exclusively on solo presentations (- he notably doesn't accompany much). Pandit ji's recent concerts (tabla duets with his son Sanju) have been major successes in London from what I have heard. I know he also teaches at annual tabla camps in the US. . but I don't know the details.
John, are you looking for a teacher? I have been Shardajee's student for four years now and all I can say is that I couldn't have found a better teacher !! As long as you do your practice then he will impart his knowledge to you as reward!! . .and when you start hearing him say, "kya baat hai" when you are playing, then you will know you are doing well at last!!
