Thanks for the info on takataka, now i have a question about laya.
Is there a standard tempo (or beats per minute) that cooresponds to different laya (vlambit, madhya, drut)? Or is it up to the mood of the performer?
It seems like the tempo in laya must be relative, especially in the case of playing one tal on top of the other. .
Also is each increase in speed a double of the preceding?
while i'm here, does anyone know any teachers around asheville nc? i'm on my own out here!
I have not heard of fixed beats per minutes. In my experience it is up to the performer or a combination of both players to find a comfortable regular speed in drut, vilambit or madhyam. Ultimately, the tabla player has to maintain the speed constantly and supply the sums and khalis to the performer.
If you'll notice though on a lahara machine, if you switch from vilambit to madhya or drut the tempo will be the same but each time it will double . And imagine you could say the same for adi vilambit or adi drut but I think it's all sort of relative.
