I guess the proper bol names might be dhete gete, taga.
but your right it is common to use the baya sometimes in certain compositions. Usually it will be played like teregita taga, a lot of times it will still be recited as terekita taka and sometimes it may be recited as tete gerenaga

hi guys,
I dont see many gujarati's on this forum.I have a question about gujarati folk music.Like Dandiya-Ras. What are they playing in last very fast beats ( in gujarat we call it Chalati).I guess it is laggi played there.Could any body please help me with this.
Scuse me about my english , i'm a french tabla player
the way to play the bayan totally free while rolling with the dayan
is to make this roll with one hand , we call it
TIRKIT TIRKIT TIRKIT ( and not tirkit tak tirkit tak )
even if it isn't excactly that ; actually this roll is very very hard to
play and required at least 5 years of training
we make it doing ; ( with the tecnique of TiTe )
TITE KE TITETI KE TITETI KE TITETI
( right - R , Left - L ) RRL RRRL RRRL RRRL ( 2 1 3 1 3 1 3 )
not as the gallop of a horse but as a rolling machine
( be carfull it is not TETE but TITE , tite is rubbing )
and your fingers have to stay on the gabas long as possible
when you play TE , your second finger has to be still on the gab )
If You do it succesfull , you , could roll , replacing the KE by GE
doing TITE GE TITETI GE TITETI GE ( the listener doesnt make the difference with tirekitetake tirekiteta for the rolling and you can also play on the baya )
The sound of this roll has to be like a water fall , very wide pleasant to ear , ventral , erotic etc . .
So , it is a technic from punjab garana , and actually most of the masters says that it is a secret technique but it is so hard that ,
only training on tirkit tirkit tirkit is a beautiful exercice , try it , you'll see
I am Prafulla Athalye from Bombay, India and am fortunate to be a direct disciple of Ustad Allarakha ji and Ustad Zakir ji. As per what I have studied or observed so far (I may be wrong), I can say sometimes Ustad Zakir ji plays "Dhatiragitatag" for "Dhatirakitatak" because it sounds filled up and better than "Dhatirakitatak" but I have observed him playing "Dhatirakitatak" too many times. So, what I personally think is that it depends on what kind of a composition it is. It is not necessary that everytime 'Dhatiragitatag' has to be used although it sounds better. It should be used as per the asthetical sense which he has tremendous.
Regards,
Prafulla Athalye.
