Hi folks,
What is the accpetable tuning range for a 5.5in tabla ? 5.25in? I have seen very little info, most of it contradictory. . Please help, don't want to ruin my tabla by tuning it too high. .
5.5 inch tabla is the best for pitches C,C # and D whereas 5.25 inches tabla is ideal for the pitch D #,E and F.So,there is a risk of breaking the pudi if you try to tune your tabla beyond D in case of 5.5 inch tabla or beyond F in case of 5.25 inches tabla. But it depends in which pitch it was tuned when it was made.Every tabla has it's own limitation. You can tune it half pitch higher or lower.Don't try to tune beyond that.As I told you earlier, those sizes are ideal for those pitches but sometimes 5.5 inches tabla is also tuned to A # although 5.75 inches tabla gives the best tone for A #.So,for tuning,if your tabla was tuned to C # in the beginning when the it was made by the maker, then you shouldn't go beyond D.Anyway, all the best and take care,
It really depends on how much syahi was put on the skin when it was made. . From my experience, a 5.5" tabla is good at C/C# and a 5.25" tabla is nice at D/D#.
Of course, this isn't absolute. I am in no way disagreeing with Prafulla. The pitches he mentions are very well possible. I would be afraid to tune my 5.25" to an E, but if it had less syahi, then I'm sure it would be possible. .
The syahi is a good point it can really change the rules on the tuning but basically Prafulla and Shawn are giving the good advise. E tabla I think are tough to find , for E, F, G I would maybe try for an octave low (big dayan).
Shawn great job on your website by the way !
Prafulla , I finally got to see your videos Yay Vat!
Really shows a lot of work and sacrifice to the music on your part, thanks for sharing.
I highly recommend viewing.
Peace
