Bikram Ghosh and Tanmoy Bose?/??? Sep 08, 2002 03:59 p.m.

On Anouska Shankars sound samples there is a table duet with these two, and I have never heard either of these guys, but Im wondering which is which. When they recite bols theres one guy who sounds sort of solid like Allah Rakhas voice, and one that sounds kind of lighter and featheryer. Anyone know which is which?

Hi Monk;
Heard Ravi and Anouskha play in Tuscon two years ago, and Bikram and Tanmoy played that night also. So we had dual sitars and dual tablas. Pretty cool! Anyway, I think Bikram was Alla Rakkha's disciple, so his style is more pronounced than Tanmoy's. I noted the latter's style is more "mellow", and less of a stand-out. Just my impression. Don't know who his guru is.

Hi Monk & Russ, I never heard Bikram Ghosh was trained by Alla Rakha. But it is possible. He was trained by his father Shankar Ghosh and received taalim from Gyan Prokash Ghosh (Jnan Prakash Ghosh)
Tanmoy Bose got taalim from Kanai Dutta and continued his training with Shankar Ghosh also. And I think the lighter voice belongs to Bikram Ghosh

Hi Swara;
Yes, quite possible I have the two players reversed. But I do remember one had a playing style that I felt was more "reserved" than the other. I do remember Kanai Dutta had a mellow touch, especially when he played with Nikhil Banerjee long ago.

Swara has the teachers correctly Bikram is not a student of Allah Rakha. Neither sound like Allah Rakha. Bikram's voice is more like Anindo's
