Hello fellow Tabla players,

I have a question regarding playing Chapukinar - the sound generated with striking the index finger on the Tabla kinar and sticking it to the kinar.

Any tips on how to get that sound the way it should sound ?

I have heard Zakir use that a lot, I mean a lot !

Im assuming you mean that "clakity" sound. Ive never heard it called that. Its done by going to the most outside edge of the kinar and strinking na but sticking it there. Note it works better if your index finger is well seasoned. It probably took me about 2 years or so to get to the point where I can use it on demand.

Thanks for the reply Joe.

Should only the first section of the index finger touch the tabla, or the whole finger (all 3 sections) ?

Thanks again.

Hallo.
Chapukinar or chapki for short
The sound is made by playing Na but at the same time you bring the middle finger down
to dampen the sound.
You can also play dampened tuk sound on the sur. If you listen to Zakir he sometimes moves
all the way across the dhaya getting a tuk, tuk, tuk tak , tak , tik , tik tik
But you have to dampen the note pressing with your middle finger as you move across.

It is possible to play it without the use of the second finger. Like a regular na. In fact, I cant remember anyone playing it with the use if the middle finger. I usually play it using the first two segements of the index. After much practice you can play it by using the first segment and just a hint of the joint.
