I am new at tabla, and i dont have a teacher. when i try to do the 'Naa' bol, it isnt very loud, and it's hard to do. when i try to combine it when 'Gaa' to make the 'Dhinn' bol (i think) it gets drowned out. am i not hitting it hard enough? it seems to be in tune to me. any help would be appreciated.

u'know, it's (at least) hard to learn those things without a teacher.
Try to find any single serious tabla player self-teached (I do not know anyone)
find some good teacher.
good luck.

You shouldnt have to hit it THAT hard, it should be more like momentum that builds up in your arm and hand and is released into the head when the finger strikes the Head

Practice "Genanana" for 10 minutes everyday at low speed and the sound will come.
I play tabla for 4 years now, and i always practice the following bols for warming up:
genanana
detetete
genatuna
gegegena
gekegena
taketereketetake

at least 5 minutes each one
have fun
