can't get it as high as it used to be. . Apr 27, 2002 07:36 a.m.

Hello. . I'm a beginner at tabla and has only been playng for a couple of years.
My problem is that i can't tune my tabla to the tone i used to "C#" my tabla is an old instrument so i didn't think i would sink in tune any more but i was wrong. .
I allready have four tasma over the gatta. . So it looks lite i have to tighten it, but i don't want do break something. . is there some other way to get the little extra, thicker gatta's?

Help!!

Alfredo, thicker gatta's don't make much difference ,a little bit maybe. Sooner or later you have to tighten it up. So why you don't give it a try right now? The first time is quit scary,I know. But it is not so difficult ,just a little bit hard for your hands .

Is there some tool that you recomend, or should i only use my hands? When i tighten it should i do it to the point where i have one tasma over the gatta?

Thanx for the help!

After tightening the tasma use the flat end of the hammer to lift them onto the gatta, this will hurt much less then trying to lift them with your hands,(speaking of experiance) :-) . no, i dont think there is a tool wich you could use,(not that i know of), and also the most reliable too you have is your hands.

ok, so how sould i do it? Lift one tasma down from the gatta and pull the slack and then move around the drum? I would rather not end up with an untunable tabla. .

Cheers!

Yeah, thats basically it, just get the slack out of the tasma and it'll be tigh, but you have to make sure you get the tasma tight before tying it. Use your feet to push the dayan and tighten the tasma,(pull towards your self), with you hands.

And it should be tunable, someone had to put them there in the first place.:-)

There is a tool that helps ALOT for pulling or reskinning entirely--a meathook. Some of you know what I'm talking about--It's a great way to save your fingers from the stress/pain of having to keep tension on one strap while pulling the slack out of the next. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND A LITTLE MEATHOOK???
