Does anyone know what characterizes tabla accompanyment of Drupad vocal (or Drupad in general)? What are the more popular tekas, bols etc? I know it's probably a big question. I do know that lower tuned tablas are often used to simulate pakhwaj.
u'know, in Dhrupad style they use more pakhawaj than tabla, and taals like Chartal, Sulphaktaal, Tivra taal, etc. commonly they use to play very little of theka, but more prakar. When you play pakhawaj compositions in the tabla, you can play the original pakhawaj bols, such as the Ta with the lower edge of the right hand, the open Ge on bayan, or the open Di in GaDiGina.
Yeah, I've got one Drupad recording with Krishan Gopal on the Vina. Anindo Chaterjee plays a very low sounding tabla (a big monster from the liner notes) that plays Chautal. Chautal is a great tal, sounds like someone taking a funky stroll down the street. For those who don't know, it's 12 beats, 4+4+4. I've seen slight variations, but it is basically:
Dha Dha Dhun Na KeTe Dha Tun Na TeTe KeTe GeDi GiNa
Do you have any ideas for Prakar with this Theka? I guess I could just improvise, but any ideas would be appreciated!
