I am an experienced percussionist/drummer. On that note, can some of you point out good instruction videos on tabla playing that can get me up-to-speed?
Hello!
Alla Rakha's video is good. I also recommend Aloke Dutta's video, where he demonstrates different strokes. I haven't seen it, but I believe it's very good. If you're interested in books buy Aloke Dutta's Poetic drumming (about 260 pages of peshkar, kaida, rela, gat, tukra and chakradar for different tals) . Courtney's Advanced theory of tabla is good. Taranath Rao's new edition of the first book with a cd (played by Sadanath Naimpalli) is also helpful. What I suggest is that you buy that material and absorb that knowledge and bravely make your own kaida variations, tukras, chakradars and learn the mathematics of tabla playing. I play my own variations and tukras and everything. I feel that my playing is then more me. I don't have a tabla teacher I've practiced everything from books, videos and cds. I hope this helps you!!
Thanks for the video suggestions. Since i am self-taught, i am more a "monkey-see, monkey-do" than a "reader". I find it is too hard to learn music from books.
