tabla rhythm cycles & philosophy - looking for more info Jan 27, 2002 08:27 a.m.

Hello,

I know a little about Indian/Hindu philosophy and am also a student of the tabla. I saw it mentioned somewhere recently that different tabla rhythm cycles (3 beats, 6 beats etc.) correspond to different philosophical ideas/deities/divinities etc. I found this idea extremely interesting and have been trying to find out more about it. If anybody has any knowledge of this profound subject or can point me to a source of information I would appreciate it.

Hi, my teacher, has told me that Dadra Taal represents an elephant's walk, Tintaal seems the galop of a horse, and Jhap taal seems like a halt's walk.

Hi
my teacher said that the khali ("empty" beats) were somehow representative of the ancient concept of the cosmic dance of the gods. anyone hear anything similar?
