Hello!
I like masters like Kishen Maharaj, Swapan Chaudhuri and Thirakwa. Zakir and Alla Rakha's Memorable tabla duet is their best.On Masters of Percussion Zakir and all the others play very well (adi tal; Hari Shankar, Vikku and Arjun Shejwal). Chaudhuri's playing is always stylistic and great. Everything he plays really works!!
Maharaj especially on Gottlieb's tape is SUPER! His technical ability is at his best. Brilliancy and oldest tradition is also great and Kumar Bose shows his best sides on that duet. Thirakwa is Thirakwa! A lot of spirit and soul! Wajid Hussain is also good on Gottlieb's tape. Comments?

Hi,

There is a player probably not very well known but whom I think to be one of the best out there. He is:
Rashid Mustafa Thirakwa --Thirakwa is a title
And the CD I bought in India is from a series called:

Dharohar
Rashid Mustafa Thirakwa - tabla Solo
Guru Padma Bhushan Ustad Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa

from Times Music India

Here what it says about Rashid.
"Rashid hails from the Farukhabad Gharana. He obtained strong grounding from his illustrious father, the late Mohd. Jaan Khan Sahib and later strengthened his skill under the tutelage of his legenday uncle, the late Padma Bhushan Ustad Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa Khan Sahib."

"He has received many awards including the 'Thirakwa Title' by Bhartiya Vidhya Bhavan in 1984. ."

A great cd where every single bol sounds really beautiful. And to make things even more exciting there is a combination of harmonium and sarangi as if in and out of the lehara. EXCELENT play!!

Pt Sharda Sahai's trance like playing with its really powerfull tete's is another of my favourites. Also Pt Kishan Maharaj 95 concert in London(on a cd) which makes you realise that slow playing can be just as or even more interesting than fast playing. Ten out of ten!
Not to forget the great Pt Samta Prasad(an old tape I got from India where he is out of this world), Anindo Chaterjee, Zakir Husssain and many others. They are all the best because they all real masters and bcause of theirs individual ways of playing.

may they all live long!

Hello!
Samta Prasad at his best is great! Maharaj is the king in playing slow. It's hard to phrase the way he does and get all those great sounds out of tabla. There are a lot of great players. .
