pitch modulation with the bayan Nov 05, 2001 08:16 a.m.

Im pretty much what you could call a rookie when it comes to the tabla (I've been at them for about a week), and i was wondering if anyone could possably give me some advice on bayan technique, especially when it comes to modulating the pitch. I can raise the pitch by pushing my wrist forward across, and gently pushing down on the pudi (i'm not even sure if this is the correct way to do this, as i cant seem to find any info on it). my problem is that i cant seem to do it the opposite way, start with a higher pitch, and end on a lower pitch. evry time i try, i just end up making the pudi go dead, either with my wrist, or by not being able to strike it with my hand relaxed.

Hi,

You see it is really good to do the second one after the first one.

First push then release!

Best,

I find it quite a bit harder to go high to low then low to high. It takes practice to get a good sound, But like Kumar said, bend up then come down right after. its good practice.

you mean do it as one stroke? strike it, then bend the note up quickly, and then release it slower, without a second strike?
