Starting Thursday, June 21st, Equinox World Music in Portsmouth, New
Hampshire will be offering tabla instruction with tabla player Gabe Halberg.
Portsmouth is an easy one-hour drive from both Boston and Portland, Maine.
Students have the choice of group classes or individual lessons. No prior
experience is necessary, although instruction is also available for intermediate
students.
Students learn:
-Basic to advanced tabla techniques
-Various rhythmic cycles (talas) and different types of compositions within
them
-The �language� of tabla - how to recite spoken syllables (bols)
-Accompaniment skills for vocal and instrumental music (at times we may
have a
sitar player to work with in class)
-To structure and play solo
The group class will be Thursday evenings at 6:30PM, starting June 21st.
Preregistration is required -- $160.00/8 week session ($20.00/class).
Private lessons can be scheduled week to week for Thursday afternoons and
evenings as well as Friday mornings -- $30.00/hr.
Students must have their own tabla to bring to class. Tabla purchase and
repair service is available through Equinox.

Gabe Halberg began his studies with Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri at the Ali
Akbar College of Music in California. His training is presently guided by
Pandit Samir Chatterjee of NYC. Gabe lives in the Burlington area of
Vermont where he teaches and performs regularly.
