He began his tabla studies with Ishwarlal Misra of Benares in 1971 and subsequently studied with Chotelal Misra and Kiran Deshponde. He also learned and performed South Indian music with carnatic violinist Adrian L'Armand. In 1991 he began studying with Zakir Hussain with whom he later performed in various projects such as "Flammable Contents" and "Rhythmscape". Lenny is co-director of "Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra", a twelve piece ensemble which merges tabla with Cuban, Brazilian and West African drumming. He also tours internationally with Atzilut, a Middle Eastern Jewish/Arabic ensemble and Rennie Harris' "Facing Mekka", a hip-hop based dance/music/video piece.
