Misc. Info: I have been studying the art of Tabla continuously since 1993 under the great Ustad Allarakha Khan in Bombay, India and son Ustad Zakir Hussain since 1994 in California. Since the passing of Ustad Allarakha in 2000, I have been under the guidance of Sri Yogesh Samsi and Ustad Zakir Hussain. I make yearly trips to India to continue my studies. I am a performer and teacher of Tabla living in the Vancouver area. I perform Hindustani classical, qawwalis, bhajans, jazz, chamber music, electronic, electro-acoustic and with all styles of folk music. As a teacher, my focus is directed towards developing proper technique, sound production and balance in the hands as well as exploring compositon types in many taals.

He has acquired an in-depth knowledge of traditional Indian music, studying music history, theory, and a variety of musical genres including North and South Indian classical, folk and devotional forms. He studied privately with renowned musicians and musicologists including Radhika Mohan Maitra and Ms Kalyani Roy. In 1979, he completed a Master's Degree in Instrumental Music (sitar) from Rabindra Bharati University in Calcutta. and, in 1986, he completed a PhD in Social Anthropology (Ethnomusicology) from Queen's University, Belfast, N. Ireland. His doctorial thesis, entitled "Sitar Music in Calcutta", was published by the University of Calgary Press and also in India.
