I perform professionally in Australia on Tabla and Mridangam with Sitar, Sarod, and Veena artistes. I have incorporated the language of Tabla; Mridangam and Tavil to create my own signature sound enabling me to play any rhythmic pattern musically and with feeling. I also use regularly in my concerts in World Music a stripped down drumkit -- with all my other percussion being micd up in the centre and the drumkit spread around me allowing me the musical freedom to move at will onto any percussion in classical or fusion styles. Misc. Info: Shen has studied Benares Gharana tabla with great devotion under his Guru-ji of tabla, Pt. Kaviraj Ashutosh Bhattacharya, a senior disciple of the great Pt. Kanthe Maharaj, since 1994. After his Guru-ji's passing in Feb 2004 he has continued his study with senior disciples of Guru-ji. Shen spends parts of each year in Japan, Australia and Varanasi, performing and teaching tabla. In all three countries, Shen has a number of tabla students, some of whom have gone on to study in Varanasi with Shen's guru-ji of tabla, Late Pt. Kaviraj Ashutosh Bhattacharya and in the music school which continues in his name. In Brisbane he recently opened the Ashu Babu Memorial Tabla School, with both adult and children's classes. Info: Pandit Ramchandra Suman, an established artist of Kathak and Pakhawaj/Taba Percussion first learnt the art of Kathak dance in Jaipur gharana under the able tutelage of late Chiranjee Lal ji. He further honed his skills in Kathak in Lucknow gharana under the legendry Shambhu Maharaj, Lachhu Maharaj and Birju Maharaj. Pandit Suman has polished knowledge of the art of choreography and the intuitive understanding of emotions for effective expressions. He gave his first dance performance at the age of 16 and earned applause from many Kathak dance masters. During his days at Bhartiya Kala Kendra, Delhi, Pt Suman learnt Pakhawaj from Guru Purshottam Desh Ji of Nathawar gharana and accompanied many Kathak exponents like Sitara Devi, Pratap Pawar and Birju Maharaj. He has also accompanied on both Tabla and Pakhawaj with Ubhyagana Vidushi Shyamala G.Bhave in India and abroad. As a percussionist he has accompanied Pandit Vidyanath Seth, and AIR Artiste and masters like Dagar Brothers, Siddheshwari Devi. He also provided tabla accompaniment to many famous Kathak dancers such as Karnatak's Maya Rao. Pt Suman has performed in several countries including Canada (Canada Expo - 1967), Germany, UK, Thailand, Singapore, Malasiya, New Zealand, and the Pacific Island. After teaching for 12 years in Fiji, in 1978 Pt Suman was was invited by the Asian Dance and Music Centre in Sydney to perform and teach at its institute. Pt SUman has given lecture demonstrations at Australian Universities at Melbourne, La Trobe, Monash, ANU, Sydney, New England, and Queensland.
