Major South Asian Events of 1998
- India conducts five underground atomic tests within the space of three days.
- Pakistan conducts six nuclear tests, within a period of 2 days. This is a response to India's nuclear tests.
- The UN Security Council votes unanimously to condemn India and Pakistan for their nuclear weapons tests.
- US and Japan impose economic sanctions against India in response to nuclear test.
- 1998 Coimbatore bombings. A series of car bombs kill at least 60 people and wound more than 200 in the southern city of Coimbatore, coinciding with the schedule of BJP president Lal Krishna Advani's campaign in the city.
- Atal Bihari Vajpayee becomes prime minister replacing outgoing Inder Kumar Gujral.

- Over 1,120 people are killed when a cyclone hits coastal areas of the western state of Gujarat.
- Kashmir conflict continues.
- A passenger train rams into another train in the northern Indian state of Punjab, killing at least 201 people.
- Nepalese police intercept a shipment of 272 human skulls in Kathmandu.
- Civil war continues in Sri Lanka.
- Pakistan tests medium-range missiles capable of hitting India.
- The "Nobel Prize for Economics" is given to Dr Amartya Kumar Sen for his work in welfare economics

- An Afghan cargo plane crashes into a mountain in southwest Pakistan killing more than 50 people.
- Lymaraina D'souza is awarded the title "Miss India", in the Femina Miss India Pageant.

- The South Indian classical dancer / educator Vempati Chinna Satyam is awarded Padma Bhushan
- M.S Subhalakshmi is awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
