Must-have VK recordings Mar 16, 2004 06:27 p.m.

With all of the talk about V. Khan's recent passing, I was wondering if anyone would like to share their opinions of "must-have" recordings by him or family members. His gharana is not well-represented in my collection. Thanks!

One of my favorites is VK's Raga Bhairavi.

Even in the last few years Ustad Vilayat Khansaheb was a powerful and startling performer onstage. (Some claim even more so than in his earlier years.) He was very much in command of the audience, his accompanists (including Zakir), as well as his instrument. The three concerts that I was fortunate to witness each left me with an overwhelming feeling that here is a man whose unique self-confidence, rare talent, respect, and commitment to his vocation was god-given.
I have all of the recordings that he made that I am aware of, videos, and the DVD. I would give all of these to you at the drop of a hat to see the Ustad play just once more.
Take a tip from me, save your money and buy a ticket to see Ravi Shankar, Bismilla Khan, Bhimsen Joshi, Ali Akbar Khan, Buddhadev Das Gupta, or Kishori Amonkar while they are still performing.
I never did get to see V.G. Jog, Alla Rakha, or Nikhil Banerjee and I will always regret that - much, much, more so than not having another recording to add to my collection.

Sincerely,
Aanaddha

His DVD of Rag Hameer is a must! It is great to watch the master at work and be able to rewind those magical passages that left you wide-eyed

My teacher also raved about his recording of Bhairavi. . .he has it on vinyl :-)

I like the old EMI recordings- most now rereleased on CD. The Darbari (NF 150186) and Yaman (NF 150142) are great. Also Ahir Bhairav, Tilak Kamod, and Bhairavi on NF 150206 and "Aftaab-e Sitar" which has Gawati, Bahar and S. Bhairavi.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Bruce - are the EMI recordings in the same vein as those that Ravi did for World Pacific?

One of my longtime favorites is "Parampara." The cover makes it appear to be a jugalbandi with father and son (Shujaat) but is actually two recordings made years apart. I've been looking for, but have yet to find an actual recording of the two together. I know they did a concert together with Hidayat and Zakir Hussein some years back - but I don't know if any recording of it exists. Concert recordings like this tend to "get found" a lot after the artist(s) in question have passed on.

Another VK video I came across on ebay was the "Music Festival of India" from Carnegie Hall in 1998. Not only does it have over 2 hours of performers including Zakir, Shivkumar Sharma, Amjad Ali Khan and sons, Pt. Jasraj, Balamurali Krishna, Hariprasad, but best of all the finale is a wonderful Bhairavi by Ustad Vilayat Khansahab accompanied by Shujaat Khansahab. There is a nice little interview of each performer, and just before his performance Vilayat Khansahab makes a really nice speech and you can see that he truly values the appreciation of the audience probably as much as they value his music. . It gives so much more impact to the performance to witness the humility of such a great master.

Have been away on a boat for 2 wks with no phone or internet and checked the forum as soon as I got home. I guess we all knew - but the reality is - I don't have words . . . I saw Khan Sahib play last Fall at Lincoln Center and he was really wonderful. He closed with Bhairagi and sang in a folk style. Really lovely. A musician at the concert told me he has always closed with Bhairagi.
BTW - Bad Ustad there is a 2 CD live recording of Vilayat and Shujaat Khan on the Navras label "Live At Royal Festival Hall". I feature a lot of jugalbandi recordings at the shop. Tho - we don't sell CDs online; only in the shop. I'm sure you can get it from Khazana or Shrimati's. If not let me know.
