Rg: I have some digital photos of the tarb/fret positions on my sitar, which I know is set up properly. If you'd like me to email them to me, give me a holler.

Hey Tarsi,
yes I did. I saw the "kenai lal". It looked ok, but I didn't think too much of it. I was a bit disappointed. It looked really cheap and was about $800 CAN. the gourd was rather small, very metalic sounding. I think i might be ok if I replaced all the strings and intonated it. There was an ebony jawari on it and I think it was a bit quiet. It just didn't feel right to me. There are a few levels of them, this one was probably a lower end model.

Still, it was a lot better than my first sitar! He had a few older ones in the back room which were associated with hemen (his assitant or something), which were promising, but needed a fair bit of work. It was a good trip, learned a bit about harmoniums and I bought a decent set of tabla for $300 CAN. (The bayan is really good, the dayan probably needs to be tightened a bit, so my instructor says).
I didn't have time to go to kala kendar to see the sitar with very little finish.

NB houseofraga.com does NOT sell clothing. It is definitely worth a visit. My instructor was really impressed with the tabla, even more impressed that someone like me (i.e. non indian) who knows nothing of tabla could come home with a decent set. I think that says a lot about their shop.

Hey,
I think I have the jawari almost where I want it now. It is half open for the most part. The big difference I think came from lowering the action. Previously, the D, N, S' tarabs wouldn't talk at all, now every tarab sings. I haven't used the upper tomba for months. When I tried it last night, there was a lot of extra highs resonating (especially tarabs), the difference was very noticeable --even if I was not backing onto a wall and this is a cheap wooden tomba (which I sanded smooth on the inside).

I think playing the hell out of it for 10 months finally woke it up, not to mention finally intonating the thing properly, and getting basic jawari.

Well yeah, I think we all got that, its a good thing to post ebay listings of interest on the forum, did you think I was objecting simply because I posted the link you left out, and commented on what appeared to be a crooked neck?

This is a discussion forum, we discuss things here! Get into the groove and join in.

Have you guys seen this one?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2574466209&category=621

what is that protruding out of the side? I guess thats why it is so inexpensive? I don't know anything about surbahars, but Jeff, your looking for surbahar, right? well, oh well, maybe its of some intrest to someone.

Hi, my name's David, and I'm new here.

That thing on the side of the surbahar is
a prop to help hold it up. Surbahars
sometimes have them because they're
heavier than sitars.
