Hiren Roy Sitar on Ebay Aug 22, 2003 05:28 p.m.

Finally a nice looking sitar on ebay for a change. It is not real fancy for a Hiren Roy, but looks to be a very solid, and well crafted instrument. The seller says its from the 80s so that would be a plus. . . . .

Hey,
it looks ok. I'd be afraid it would get damaged with the upper gourd attached and in that case if shipped. He will ship only to US addresses though. It looks like swansong bid for it. I wonder if that is the same one as on this group. .

Judging from the feedback of the guy who won (nationalman), it looks like it went to a dealer. Too bad.

Hello. . I bought the Hiren Roy on Ebay and No. .I'm not a dealer. I've played my brother in law's Hiren Roy a number of times over the years and seeing that one was available on Ebay from the '80s decided to buy it.
I'm going to order one from Lars also later this fall. I'll give a full report on this instrument when I receive it and obviously have concerns about shipment considering the chipboard case.
I'd enjoy hearing from anyone about this particular instrument.

Hey Rob, email me about the packing. . .maybe I can make a few suggestions.
I have a 45 year old HR, it's very nice. . .I'm told the new instruments are much better from them now after somewhat of a quality slump. I'll let you know for sure soon, that sitar looked nice though, I bid a little on it for thrills. .if you are the Rob from AZ, then you might think about taking a days drive and picking it up?

(if all of us who say they are going to buy from Lars, I think he will be a busy man :-)

Congrats, Rob! Glad it went to someone who will actually play it!

I all seriousness, get the sitar a fiberglass case, and older Hiren Roy should be treated like the most precious of all sitars because after all they are along with Kanai Lal instruments. I also am glad to see someone experienced and with a respect for the instrument purchased it, I was worried some fusion artist would have picked it up for some crappy sitar fusion music.

The Sitar arrived safely and I've spent the better part of the last two days getting it set up. From what the Ebay seller told me, a member of his musical group brought it back from Calcutta in the early '80s. It must have been played at some time in it's life as the Jawari looks like it's had some wear to it, but the rest of the Sitar looks to be in relatively fine shape.

Lars has been extremely helful; he's a true fountain of knowledge. He sent me an email, which I forwarded to the Ebay seller on how to safely pack the Sitar for shipment. I bought a couple sets of Pyramid strings and it took around 3 hours to restring it.
I polishisd the frets, which were very dull and worked on each of the pegs to make sure there was no slippage.
I only broke one Tarb, and after doing a few I got into the groove. I punctured my fingers a couple times, lol. . glad I had a recent tetanus shot.
The actual tuning and tweaking took longer than the restringing; I changed tunings a couple of times, and settled for the the C# tuning that was posted here a couple days ago.

Once it was setup the Sitar came alive, hearing the sympathetics go off when the instrument is dialed it is something to behold. My Siamese seem to like it, they both curl up like pretzels when it's time to practice.

Hi Rob,
glad you got the HR tuned up. How does it sound in comparison to other sitars that you have heard? Does it have that extra block below the nut, like N. Banerjee?

Nice to know that there was a good sitar purchased on ebay.

The Sitar has a nice mature tone, and I'm basing that from an acoustic guitar perspective.
Is there a picture of the Block you are referring to?

No. it doesn't have the extra piece like in that picture. It looks like that might be some sort of support.

My cats are Oriental shorthairs, they are brothers 3 years old, one is Jet Black, the other is Chocolate. They've made a home in the Sitar Case.

Jan, I used to have a siamese. Every time I played, she would come walking into the room, lay down and fall asleep. Don't really know if that was a good thing or not. Maybe she liked it and mellowed out, or maybe it bored her into sleep!

Maybe this is a bit off topic, but is it me or are sitarist, beenkars, sarodiyas, etc. . cat lovers? I live at home with my parents and we have 8 of them, mainly mutts, but three are Cornish Rex's, and one of them is my practice companion. If I am not paying attention to him during practice he just goes and sits right in my lap, and there has been a time or two when he has found my rudra veena gourds a nice retreat. Now that I am going to take up Bhara Natya I wonder what he will do for attention,. . . perhaps dance with me. .lol

If your cat goes into meditation when you play (cat lover or not) its a good thing. .

OT again, as is usual for us.
Well, that explains it! Cats dig sitar, dogs dig other stuff. Which might also explain why a lot of sitarists are cat people (with the occasional dog person)? I don't know, just an operating theory.

Hi All:
We had to let my seal-point go a couple of months ago, due to kidney failure :-\ He use to come into the room when I started practicing, with this look on his face like "Wow, what a cool sound." Then he'd look at me like "Oh, it's just you." and turn around and leave. I guess need more practice. Maybe I'll get to play for him on Rainbow Bridge :-)

PB, I'm with you. Never owned a cat, never want to. I've got two crazy Weimaraners in my house right now.

Well, I'm a dog man myself and in general I think people with dogs are more intelligent, up-standing, heroic, talented and just plain better people.
But you cat lovers have some qualities maybe, I think, well I'm not sure?:-)??

My cat(s) all get nervous and beat feet, go find somewhere a little far away from me to lay around when I get my sitar, as I hiss at 'em, tell 'em to beat it, and give them dirty looks when they get within a 6 feet radius of my sitar. . . . . . .!!! I just don't trust 'em not to get too curious and maybe hurt Her. . . . . .
but they do seem to groove out on the sound!

Dogs just howl when I play. Sometimes I think they're trying to sing along! Ya reckon?

I vote for dogs. My parents paid for my birth by selling Weimaraner pups (so Matt, I guess Weimaraners win). At one point we had 14 dogs on the farm, all were about 100 lbs, so never really had a crime problem, although the 14 greeted folks in the driveway with wagging tails and a "pet me, pet me first, me, me" attitude.
I did have two cats, Poo Poo and Pee Pee, when I lived on a dairy farm in upstate NY for awhile.
Received 8 stitches down the center of my nose one night as a result of trying to extract Pee Pee from the box spring matress. It was an accident on her part, but I still distrust cats.

We have 3 dogs, Baby, Buddy and Angel. Then theres the cats, 3 inside, Boo, Rebel and Anthoni and 3 outside cats Kitty, Sitar and the other one I dont know his name?
Sitar has a deformed face!

We have some birds that drive me nuts at night and some fish too. The one cat Boo usally sits in my sitar case when I'm practicing

Jeff, hope you vaccum out that case now and then.

Stephen, Pee Pee and Poo Poo? Those are real good names!!! Wish I'd have thought of that. Really funny.

Well, not my intention of setting cat people against dog people. Heck, I grew up with a boxer dog. Got him when he was just 6 hours old. Buried him many years later. Got my siamese as a teenager, had her until I was 30. Had to put her down due to her cancer. They both have their qualities, but all in all, I guess I just prefer cats.

Sorry for all of you who've lost furry friends, I've had more than my share as well, always miss those who've went onto the Rainbow Highway. . . . . . .

We have 4 cats here now, but only 1 is mine. . .there's Azrael, Sylvester, Chester and Frezno. . . . .Frez is mine, altho started out as my son's. . .someone had dumped him in a huge parking lot, he was so little his eyes weren't even open. . . . .he was diagnosed diabetic this last Nov, so I have to inject him twice a day now. . .but doing good. . . . . .

Had many dogs over the years too, one of my favorites was a golden retriever named Ralph, man you wanna talk about a ham/actor dog!
sheesh!

Animals are cool because they are so loyal and loving and always so very grateful for even the smallest of things you do for them. . .that says oodles to me

They know what things really honk me off and are, for the most part , pretty well behaved, altho I suppose I can't blame them for being curious. . . . . .and they DO LOVE CASES! Especially the case to my Ovation, the curve in the back must be really comfy to 'em. . . .I used to have a cat named Bill that would sleep in the bathroom sink for the same reason. . .when he passed, I had him cremated, have his ashes, he was way kewl. . .!

Frez does like to listen to my sitar (he's the only one I usually let into my room where I practice)
But I always close my case(s), I think having to vaccum the house with 4 cats is plenty enough,
much less my cases! what a drag!

AJ
ps besides, think of having to clean a fur ball or two outta there, yech!!!
