Does anyone have any videos or know where to get video of Nikhil Banerjee? I have seen some clips on the internet but would absolutely love to see a full concert.

Thanks!

Neal-I study with David too. He mentioned a student in Boston, must have been you! I enjoy the 2 hour sessions with him. I go to Imagine studios in Amesbury as well. How long have you been studying?

Remco and Beenkarji-Thanks for the info, I have gone to that site and saw the 2 vids of Nikhilji. . .I am hoping there is video of a full concert of him somewhere on VHS or DVD that someone knows about. He is the greatest!!

I will check on the video, one of my friends went to quite a few of his concerts and I believe they may have taped them.

WOW !!! Nikhil Banerjee on video: that must be, like the Holy grail of Indian music videos. If there's a way of transfering it to a computer-ready file (real time, quicktime etc. .) please do so. . . Over here in Europe we've got the PAL system, so US-videos won't work over here. . . I actually installed Quicktime only for the Nikhil Banerjee-clips.

Peace,

Remco

I agree Remco, whatever it takes or costs! To me, it would be priceless to watch him play a complete raga.

Great interview with him over on http://www.ragarecords.com

Wow. I never expected to witness his greatness, I am still in shock. The quality is poor but I really can't complain since I thought I would never see him perform. If only the clips were longer than 5 minutes!!! There has to be someone willing to fund that european documentary, maybe we could get a fundraiser going of some sort. . Wow.

There is a short video documentary on the music of India, that ended with about 10 minutes of very nice footage of NB. I was always amazed at how his body kind of wiggled as he played. He was as rubbery as some of his gamakas. I don't recall the name of the video or where I got it (I have since gotten rid of all VHS stuff) but it wasn't that hard to find. The total video length was about 22 minutes

http://www.stevenbaigel.com/banerjeedoc/documentary.html

This thing is a little misleading as some of you may have already found out. There was a project picking up steam some time ago to document NB's life similar to the way Raviji's has been done. But it was never finished due to inadequate funding. So, if some of you NB fans really want it to happen, then there go you.

As a disclaimer, I'm not advocating this nor am I affiliated. I would contact this Baigel person first to find out more detail before sending a check to him!

Yeah the video that he plays on is called the Music of India, it is a school level documetary, but maybe a librairy would have it. Funny thing you mention installing quicktime, the first time I went to Patrick's site I also just installed it to watch a video, but I wanted to see Parveen Sultana, I just love here voice.

I had an almost religious experience today. I've heard Banerjee before, but only short cuts and a cruddy download I had, nothing really great. Not being able to find any of his CD's even in the large Dallas/Fort Worth area, I finally got around to ordering a couple of CD's. Being laid up today, I had ample opportunity to listen to them.

I started with Shree Rag, and the Alap was amazing. I started getting excited during the first gat, but about half-way through the second gat, I just couldn't stand how great he was. I almost cried. Nikhil Banerjee is a god.

Hi Jaym,

I have been studying with David for about a year, although sometime there is a number of weeks between lessons.

How long have you been with him?

My most difficult thing is when he will play something and you have to replicate what he just played. I am totally dense with that and have alot of difficulty. Once I know the phrase, I am fine and can play it with all the ornementaion etc. But I realize that's just canned playing and not improvisation.

I am going up to Amesbury Tuesday at noon, maybe I will see you there?

Does anyone know how to download (to permanently have on your computer) these clips of Banerjee. I was always under the impression you could not do that with streaming video???

ehhhh. . . I assume you're talking bout the Moutal-videos? They're in the Quicktime (Apple-format) and you can download them. You've got to install QT to see them though. . .

Hi All: I have the "Music of India" video. I nabbed it on ebay around a year ago. Ted is right, the video has that '60s grade-school documentary vibe to it. But if you can find a copy, it's worth buying. There are two short sections featuring a very young N.B. One is a demontration of meend, etc. which has great close-ups of his fingers. The other, he plays a short folk melody, very lovely. The rest of the video is good too, some nice flute and dance.

I am a great fan of Nikhil Banerjee and I feel very excited to see his videos through the information from this board. To me, seeing him play sitar is a religious experience because I thought I never have the chance. I got all the CDs of Nikhil Banerjee from Chhanda Dhara and some from Raga Records. Among them, I think Raga Malkauns from Chhanda Dhara is the best one. He uses meend very fast to create beautiful phrases. NB is really the greatest.

Peace and Love

I feel much the same way about Ustad Asad Ali Khan, for some reason his music has the ability to bring me to tears quite often, so I understand what it must be like to see a video of Panditji. If I ever saw a video of Ustad I would be so overjoyed.

What i've understood, most of the concerts of Asad Ali Khan are videotaped; at least the concert I went to in Amsterdam a couple of months ago. Pretty weird: during the concert this guy was carrying around this HUGE stand with a videocamera, no comments, but when another person (who didn't belong to Asad Ali Khan's entourage) took out this minisule portable camera he was told not to make photographs. Hmmmmm. . .

Maybe it's possible to contact Carten Wicke (http://www.dhrupad.de) for more info.

Nikhil Bannerjee fans may want to listen to Purbiyan Chatterjee. He toured in 2002 (or perhaps 2001) and will be in the US in 2004 spring.

As you know Nikhil did not teach seriously, but Purbiyan's father was an avid fan and listened to his recordings and concerts. He teaches at the Ali Akbar School in the summers usually.

He did not make is as a popular sitarist, but Purbiyan's playing is impressive. It is uncanny (and strange) how much he sounds like Nikhil Bannerjee in tone, musical structure, approach etc. There are flashes whether Purbiyan's personality/technique come through. .but overall it has the fele of NB.

No instrumentalist I have heard so far (except for Anoushka), sound like their mentor. Purbiyan falls in that rare exception.

A

P.S. He also used the third finger a LOT on frets as does his father. Does anyone know whether NB did the same?

I heard of Purbayan Chatterjee on the website, MusicalNirvana which has some samples of great masters. Indeed, he sounds like Nikhil Banerjee, but I cannot get his CDs in Taiwan. .

Here is the website:

You can learn more about Purbayan on his website www.purbayan.com Purbayans father actually learned from Nikhil B. for a number of years, and passed that knowledge on to his son. He is a gifted teacher. But it explains why he sounds so much like N.B.
