tuner pickup cable with clips Aug 05, 2003 01:55 p.m.

Has anyone use a tuner pickup cable with their chrom atic tuner? Sometimes it is hard to get a clear signal with the mic only, especially with the brass strings and in the low range. It jumps around a lot.

Will the tuner pickup cable help? You can just clip them to the bridge or sucktion cup them on. I don't know whether this is a gimick or a useful tool.

thanks

The cable definitely helps! Its not a gimick in any way. I first started using one in Mountain Dulcimer class several years ago. There were about 12 of us all in one room. Without the cable, you could be picking up someone else's tuning, giving you a false signal. But even alone, I find that its easier to pick up a good tone from the instrument to tune to.

Mine has an aligator clip. On my sitar, I usually clip it to one of the legs on the bridge, since I don't want the chance of harming the bone. Or I clip it to the end posts, or the nut; it really doesn't make a lot of difference where on the instrument you put it. I never seem to have much problems with the tarbs overtones disturbing tuning of the mains, although I've heard others have. You might want to muffle the tarbs with a handkerchief or something.

We also use the tuner with cable on other instruments in the house, especially my daughter's accoustic base. We seem to have no problems with the lower string overtones on it either.

I just recently bought a newer Korg tuner that also can provide a tone if you'ld rather tune to a tone, rather than let the tuner determine your tuning. It only cost about $20. And the same cable from my older Korg works (I think its pretty standard, probably works with any tuner that has a 1/4 guitar jack on it.) I think the cable cost about $20, but that was a few years ago.

Thanks Bill. I'll order one. I saw a suction cup one too. I will probably grab the clip one like you have. For tone generation, I want to get the new raagini tanpura machine that generates the western scale.

Yeah, the aligator clip is a bit scarey to use, but I believe with careful use, you won't hurt anything.

By the way, its Billy with a y.
