Creating your own profile for this forum - may take a bit to load Jul 12, 2003 12:08 a.m.

I notice a lot of people haven't posted profiles on this forum. I can understand that some people may feel they want to keep such things private, and rather not post a profile, and that's ok. If you do want to post a profile, you can put as little or as much information in it that you feel comfortable with. I thought I'd post some simple instructions on how to post your profile, and how you can access other's profiles.

At the top of the page, you'll see this banner; click on "Profile".

This will bring up a form like this:

Just fill in the information you want to put in, and click the button on the bottom to save it. Note: the photo feature does not work on this forum.

When you are reading through the message index, a member that has a profile will have the little profile head under the message poster's name, like this:

Clicking on the little head will bring up the poster's profile, like this:

Of course, after viewing the profile, you can click the back button to go back to the message index.

By the way, note that the profile has a box for home page. If you have a home page, you can place its address here. When you do that, a little house will be under the poster's name, next to the head, and the reader can click this house to go directly to your home page. Pretty nifty.

I hope some of you will take the opportunity to post profiles. This will help us know where others are from, what our interests are, and so forth. If you have any questions, be sure to ask!

Works for me Lars! Let's hope more jump on the "bandwagon", to make this a real community. But again I'll emphasize, if anyone doesn't want to post a profile, that's perfectly understandable.

One thing I just noticed; the comments section in the profile allows only up to 250 characters, so don't do like I did and try to write a book!!!

My main reason to not comlete a profile is because far too many uncool people have been harvesting my name and email recently to send me truck loads of spam every hour or so, 24 hours a day. I really don't need to enlarge/compress various body parts, make a zillion dollars with no investment or risk, powerup with viagra, bail out some millionaire's rich and singe wife in the Ivory Coast with a nice cut in it for me, etc and so forth, ad nauseaum. Even this forum gets hit with spam now and then! So, I've already given my name and location in numerous previous posts, and that's good for now I think.

Hey Russ, speaking of spam, try a program called mailwasher. .it's fantastic, you can bounce back all your spam before it even gets to you off your server/ISP. I've noticed a decrease in Spam since using it. . . .

This a web-server based form, it should have nothing to do with what you are using to browse the internet. At least give it a try to see if it works.

Man, I certainly agree! I don't like to post my email address either, because I hate all the trouble it takes me to report spammers. That's why I'm glad the profile form has an option to hide my email address, so no-one here can see it, and the search-bots won't find it either. I'm not sure if you even need to post your email address on the form, but if there is, just click the "Hide your email address" button.

If you want, click on my profile, and see if you can find my email address anywhere. Its not there, and will never be there if I don't want it to be.

For those that may not have clicked that little box, you can go back and modify your profile if you wish. You can change anything there at any time. There's no reason to worry about getting more spam as a result of posting a profile here.
