An interesting question Feb 23, 2003 11:54 p.m.

Hey all- I've been doing some extensive looking around here for a sitar instructor. No avail. Man, I made myself look like an idiot. I contacted the local Univ. professor and was like "Indian music? Hahah!" So yeah. .
I was wondering if anyone well learned would start doing kind of e-mail lessons. I can't get as much info out of the board and stuff, and would like a one-on-one thing. I know that e-mail lessons might be weird, but thats like the only opportunity right now.

So please consider

Mike

Hi Mike,
Don't feel like an idiot. . .maybe the professor was. . .
There is one teacher via the internet from India that teaches online but I don't know how effective it is. You exchange MP3's, etc. you could try it? His name is Sanjoy Bandyopadhyaya
http://www.geocities.com/sitar_sanjoy/

I am willing to help you via phone and email if you want. I'm not a teacher but can guide you somewhat so your practice goes well as you will want to work on exercises first. . . . .Sanjoy is a little expensive so you would be better off approaching him after having a good knowledge of the basics. Also I know several players that visit yearly and odds are one will be near you at some point. Email me if you're interested. . .

If you live in L.A calif I can Help you out a bit , I have some fingering charts, and can show you one on one how to tune a Sitar, also have a limited ability for a few finger stokes on the Tabla. Wish I had two extra (Hindu deity) arms so I could play them both. . . . .Peace

Yep, common problem. Unless you live in a big city with a diverse population, good luck finding a teacher. Like most of us, you're probably going to have to travel a good ways, even out of state. I tried with our local university music dept, got the same response. A little biased I would think. . . . . . .

You might want to see web-site at http://www.davidpontbriand.net/

He is my teacher and might be starting online teaching? Check with him first because I am not 100% sure. Neal
