Tabla Software - please feedback May 04, 2004 03:48 a.m.

Hi all,
I am planning to start (well actually I already started) putting together a desktop application which should be a tool to maintain a compositions database.
The basic features of the first version are going to be:
- bols database (including WAV files)
- composition types database
- gharanas database
- tals database
- compositions database (this is the core of the application): through a simple graphic interface it will be possible to build compositions which will be stored in the database. It will be of course possible to play the composition cycling the desired number of time -
- Compositions will be exportable to PDF format
- Help section

This will be eventualy linked to a public web-based database where compositions could be optionaly published.

I know there are some software packages out there but as far as I know they are commercial packages. My idea is to release the software under the GPL license (General Public License). . in other words it will be Free Software (if you are interested is knowing more about free software please read http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html).

I'd love to have ideas, suggestions and feedbacks from anyone interested in this project.
If someone is willing to help in anyway (developing, organizing etc) well I'd be more then happy! The desktop application will be written in Tcl/Tk language (for cross-platform comatibility - Linux, Windows, MacOS X) while the web-site part will be written in PHP.
You can contact me through this forum or e-mail me at >webmaster@phpauction.org.

Thanks in advance to anyone.

Gian

Sounds like a highly worthwhile undertaking that could be useful in establishing a long -overdue standard. I'd love to see an example of the notation format you're planning to use - could you post some beta examples somewhere for feedback, even if it's not yet in interactive form?

Hi Aanaddha
thanks for you answer. In my first (uncomplete) version bols were entered in text fields with the possibility to select the bol from a menu popping up right-clicking on the mouse.

I uploaded some screenshots at http://gianlucabaldo.com/tktabla/
The second one is the window where Tals are entered. . you'll see what I mean above.
The idea is to completely re-code what I have and give it a more friendly and graphic interface.

As far as you request "I'd love to see an example of the notation format you're planning to use" I am not 100% sure what you mean. . please consider english is not my primary language and I have problems sometimes to understand.
If I got what you mean here's my answer:
I was going to leave the user the possibility to have compositions expressed in the western way (Dha Dhin ect) or using the indian notation, or both. Very much like in David's books to give you an idea where you have the indian notation and the western one.

Going back to the interface I was willing to implement, it should something similar to a "drawing software" interface. . something like having all the bols or phrases available in some sort of pallete and just drag and drop them into the working area. . this is surelly faster and simpler then using text fields.

As I told you the reason of posting here seeking for suggestions is to be sure to take the best way since the beginning.
I also think that, since an open source tool is missing, this is a good chance to make something universaly useful.

Last thing, if there's any interest around this project I can quickly put together a web site with a discussion board or a mailing list to go on discussing there, without filling this forum of posts which are probably not of general interest.

Again thanks

Gian,
Aiutiamoli.

Gian,
A discussion board would be an excellent idea. If you read some of the recent posts here you can get an idea of the difficulties with various notation formats - such as what to do with pauses, flams, sustained bols, layakari, fingering anomolies, etc that cannot be explained well without a visual reference.
I think it can be done but I've yet to see a notation system that's 100 % comprehensible - and when one bol or part of a bol of any composition is played off-beat or it's unclear where the bol or beat begins the composition is worthless. Again, I think it can be done but it will take a lot of fine-tuning and testing to make it a success. Let us help you.

Nice one!! :-)
yes I am italian even if I live in Spain.

I already puchased tktabla.org and tktabla.com and will have the site up within a couple of day.
I agree with you, there's a lot of work behind it but the good thing with an open source project is that you can g step by step (you do not have commercial deadlines) and we will probably get help from someone interesting in the project.
I started an open source project in 1999 which then turned in my primary business. Anyway I would like this to remain open source and never turn into a commercial package.

What I suggest is the following:
- I'll set up the site with a discussion board
- I'll also make available the basic spaceifications I have in mind
- we will stat from there defining the functionalities in detail before moving any further

Again anyone interested in partecipating is welcome.

Cheers

Gian
