Question about Kala Kendar May 29, 2003 04:50 p.m.

I'm a beginner who unfortunately is in an area with no teachers around. I plan on sometime soon seeking one out even if it's only for the basics. But for now, the band I am in wants to integrate the tabla into it (and I've long had a deep interest in it myself and am willing to go through however much learning is needed). I want to purchase a beginner set. . the site Kala Kendar seemed to have a good return policy, a low shipping price, and seemingly good quality tabla, but I am wondering if anyone knows anything about them? Any experiences would be a big aid in my decision. I was thinking about their set #2 for $165 as it has a 2.5kg bayan (and i can't really afford higher up at this point). What are your recommendations? Thanks for the help!

Hi Zohar,

I bought my set from there. It's actually great. However, had I gone to the store myself, I wouldn't have picked it out because of some physical things I don't like about it. Nonethless, it sounds great and they are well priced.

Basically, it's better to go into the store if you can so you can pick one out yourself. If you go for mail order, they definitely are fair, just be ready for some potential cosmetic defects and not the best of the batch like you would pick out yourself.
