Hello!
I have that Sarwar Sabri tape. He plays clearly, has a good laya. He used two rather uncommon taals too (farodust and Bundu khani) and I think we can hear many traditional Ajrara compositions. A must have. The only thing I dislike in solo recordings is the lehra played with harmonium. When will they forget that noise machine? Ouggh. .

That's funny. . I prefer harmonium for tabla solo :-)

Have you heard Sadanand Naimpalli's tabla solos? Any comments on him would be also welcome. His solo recordings are pretty difficult to get. I have heard him as accompanist.

Hi Jake,

I have that Kumar Bose CD, and I'd definitely reccomend it! As the title says, it's very "dynamic" :-)

Great baya interpretation and energy. It is authentic to the Benares style, but with his own personal signature.

Sarwar Sabri, I've heard him accompany on one CD, and I heard a solo tape a long time ago, and I remember liking the performance, but I didn't know back then what I know now. The tape had 4 solos on it, so they were quite short. . I remember the playing being very clean, but other than that, I don't remember much. .

Sadanand Naimpalli has taught in Austin twice. He's a great teacher very knowledgable, speaks very fluent english. He is a great and unique player, plays the long slokas in his tabla solos. He is working on a tabla book which I hope he finishes soon I had a chance to look at it and it's very deep with lots of details about each gharana, history etc. He soars in the delhi style of playing, ajarya and farukhbad. He's also very aproachable, easy to talk to.

Hi

Kumar Bose's live cd in Saptak is amazing. Nothing beats a Banaras solo for me. The lehara is just great. Listen to a great Banarasi theka(equivalent to a peskar) after a great introduction(Bhumika+Uthan), and the theka on the second cd with emphasis on the Dhin's and also how the lehara comes alive. Great stuff indeed.
I've got the same Sarwar Sabri's cd mentioned above with a 14, 81/2, 16 and a 6 beat solos. I find it to be a very good cd. Very clear playing. Crisp TeTe's and great harmonium playing.
