Hi,
I am new to this (forum, tabla, the whole thing). I am writing on behalf of a friend. He leaves on a remote island in the South Pacific (New-Caledonia). He wants to learn tabla. There are no teacher on this island and he speaks French (but he understands English pretty well). I came upon this forum last winter while I was looking for information on tablas as my friend had asked me to purchase him a set of tablas. I must say that many things I read here helped a great deal. I did read for instance that you cannot learn tabla on your own. My friend is planning on going to India next year. Meanwhile he would like to start. Is there anybody who would be willing to answer his questions (the first one will be about tuning the duggi)? The answers could be given in English as long as my friend can ask them in French.

If your friend has a computer he may be interested in this French webpage: http://homepage.mac.com/patrickmoutal/macmoutal/rag.html
