I'm a new, actually soon-to-be tabla player. I'm ordering them today. I have NO experience with tabla, but a tad bit of experience with sitar. I have so many questions like tuning, basic bols and stuff, but I lack one essential thing to learn these. . .$$$ So is there anything you guys can say on the basics? I don't have a job right now so I can't buy any teaching material, and there are no tabla players here in Alaska(that I know of)

Any help is appreciated

Mike

Hi,

In case you haven't checked yet, have a look at chandrakantha.com/tablasite . . there's lots of information there to help you get started.

Yeah Shawn, I did see that site. Its pretty informative. I'm 16 though and I really had a hard time understanding some of it, especially the Psychoacoustic perspective stuff.

Thanks
Mike

Hi again,

Well . . the psychoacoustic stuff isn't really needed to get started playing tabla. That's more in the category of academic study. . To get started, you need the names of the strokes, hand positions, etc. . If there's really no way for you to get a teacher, I'd reccomend you at least scrape together the money to buy a video, because while pictures of hand positions are nice, they're quite hard to understand.

I recommend Pandit Shankar Ghosh's Play tabla (video+booklet). I bought it from Knock on wood (U.K). I don't know any other place selling that video.
