What's first? Mar 03, 2003 07:10 p.m.

I'm a new, actually soon-to-be tabla player. I'm ordering them today. I have NO experience with tabla, but a tad bit of experience with sitar. I have so many questions like tuning, basic bols and stuff, but I lack one essential thing to learn these....$$$ So is there anything you guys can say on the basics? I don't have a job right now so I can't buy any teaching material, and there are no tabla players here in Alaska(that I know of)

Any help is appreciated

Mike

Hi,

In case you haven't checked yet, have a look at chandrakantha.com/tablasite ... there's lots of information there to help you get started.

Yeah Shawn, I did see that site. Its pretty informative. I'm 16 though and I really had a hard time understanding some of it, especially the Psychoacoustic perspective stuff.

Thanks
Mike

Hi again,

Well ... the psychoacoustic stuff isn't really needed to get started playing tabla. That's more in the category of academic study... To get started, you need the names of the strokes, hand positions, etc... If there's really no way for you to get a teacher, I'd reccomend you at least scrape together the money to buy a video, because while pictures of hand positions are nice, they're quite hard to understand.

I recommend Pandit Shankar Ghosh's Play tabla (video+booklet). I bought it from Knock on wood (U.K). I don't know any other place selling that video.
