Im hopeing to find an effective yet reletivley inexspensive way to mic my tablas. will a normal mic setup to the job or will i need to invest in something special. any advice would be great.

Depends on the situation in terms of micing. in general, it seems that one dynamic mic between the two drums is ok, and is used pretty often. A better (probably more expensive) solution is to get a stereo mic, or even two seperate mics.
what kind of price range are you looking at?

It really depends on whether you are involved in live work or studio work.

In studios, a good quality condenser eg. AKG C3000 is excellent.

It can also be used in live sessions but care must be taken since without proper settings they can be prone to feedback.

Failing that, a shure SM58 always performs well.
