Hi there, Sharda Sahai is one of the most amazing soloists I've heard. His presentation is pure Benares Baj (- He is the gharandar of this school of tabla; a direct descendent of the founder of the gharana - Pt. Ram Sahai). His playing has facets of power, elegance and lyricism... I particularly enjoy his recording "Art of the Benares Baj" (available on the Audiorec label) - IMHO it's like rhythmic poetry. From what I understand, he focuses almost exclusively on solo presentations (- he notably doesn't accompany much). Pandit ji's recent concerts (tabla duets with his son Sanju) have been major successes in London from what I have heard. I know he also teaches at annual tabla camps in the US... but I don't know the details.
John, are you looking for a teacher? I have been Shardajee's student for four years now and all I can say is that I couldn't have found a better teacher !! As long as you do your practice then he will impart his knowledge to you as reward!! ...and when you start hearing him say, "kya baat hai" when you are playing, then you will know you are doing well at last!!
