tuning tablas Jan 12, 2003 03:39 a.m.

Hi out there, I recently bought some tablas and I'm confused on how to tune them. The bayan seems too high pitched and when I set them on the rings and play them, they seem to get a buzzing noise from them, I have no bloody idea what I'm doing! HELP ME!!!!!

There should be some answers in this forum we have addressed tuning quite a bit in the past. I recall several answers to both questions

By the way who did you purchase them from and did you contact them about your questions and what was there response?

The way of tuning is a bit different from type to type.
The main thing, when tuning, is to play a lot on them, the skin is made out of goat, and it respond heavily to humidity (not cold and heat!), so when you are playing on the Byan (deep/left Tabla) it will after a while go down (caused by the humidity from your hands), when playing - once in a while pressure it. If the Byan has boles; take them out, or losen them as much as possible.
The Dayan (the right tabla), you tighten the woodern boles and use the (following) hammer on the Gajara (the farthest out ring). and you can experiment with the boles on 1, 2 or three strops - depending on the pitch.

Hi again, by the way, the buzzing noice is perfectly normal!!! you just have to play on them for a while. Use TALCUM on your hands.

Too much of talcum will result in a lot of caking on the pudi. . which will eventually dampen the ring of the Tabla. When starting off new, IMHO, the best option is to get the Tabla tuned by a professional, otherwise you risk spoiling the pudi beyond redemption. The maintain the pitch by slight tapping on the gajra alone. Leave the Gattu alone preferably. . light tapping in the downward direction (for tuning up) and upward direction (for tuning down) should keep the pitch steady. . .
