I am considering taking up the tabla, but one thing bothers me. I can't sit cross-legged for long. Recently, I went to Fiji and stayed with some villagers there. Everyday they would sit cross-legged on mats and drink kava for hours at a time. My ass hurt, by back hurt, I needed something to lean on.

Does anyone here have the same problem and have any alternatives to share?

We all had the same problem in one way or another. The solution is to keep sitting and try to remember to keep your spine straight as much as u can.

Try sitting in half lotus position on a cushion, with your knees on the ground. Stretch really well before hand, the key is keeping your back straight. Once your spine is straight and can stay straight, everything else is fine. You might check out some yoga books for specific stretches and sitting styles.

yeah really if you have no acuall medical reason for the disconfort, you should and will get over the pain. After about a month for me, of stretching the hips and legs constantly and sitting and playing and sitting and doing everyhting, it is acually more confortable sitting on the floor for longer periods than a chair.
