In tunning where should hammer strike? . .on top of strap ?. .where do i strike. .? what about bayan ? . .i read . .do not hit strap. ., i usually hit strap ,where underneath?. . thanks for replys to my questions. . i have been trying to make up my own stuff on tabla even using hand positions from other drums. .but i always think this is wrong. .what do you good tabla players think ?. .i seem to prefer rhythms , like african than indian. .like. .dha-dha-titaka-dha-titaka-tita is based on egyptian maqsoum rhythm. .which would change to dha-kat-titakitadhi-titaka-tita. .i played this rhythm on a cd ,song called summer breeze. .band .amberjack. .www.bradzootbiz

Basic tunig is done by the gats, the fine tunig is done on the gajara , if you hit the top the sound goes up, if you hit the bottom, the sound goes down. You can hit anywhere on the gajara just make sure you keep the tension equal around the pudi. For the bayan you can use small gats to tune it.

Dont hit the straps, hit directly on the gajara
