Tihai's are small compositions. They are played mostly during end of a kaida

For eg: the most simple kaida Dha Dha Ti T - tin taal

tihai will be

dha dha ti ti
dha dha tin na
dha 1 2 3
dha dha ti ti
dha dha tin na
dha 1 2 3
dha dha ti ti
dha dha tin na
dha - Ends here - this is ur first beat of basic tin taal

1 2 3 are empty beats. you can either fill those with anything you want or can keep those empty. so you see its played three times and the last beat of your tihai is your first beat of tin taal. it could also end up at some other positions like 5 beat, 13th beat, etc. . but then u have to be very carefull and keep track of ur beats or else you will confuse the main artist.

Hope that helps. . .

Cheers
-Dhaval

Dha Ge Na Ti | Na Ka Dhin Na|

Dhin Na Dha Ge | Na Ti Na Ka |

Dha Ti Ta Na | Ta Dhe Te Ta |

(Bhajan )
Dhi NaDhi -Dhi NaGa | Ti NaTi -Ti NaGa |

You want some more? Theres more in the Fundamentals of Tabla book. They are harder to explain.

Some more Bhajani varieties:
1) Dhin TaDhin Ke Tak | Tin TaTin Ke Tak
2) Dha Tita Tak Tin | Ta Tit Nak Dhin ( Nak is same as Tak )
3) In variation (1), replace Tak by TiraKit to sound like:
Din TaDhin ke Tirakit | Tin TaTin ke Tirakit
Tirakit must come out clean and fast.

Hope these add to your collection of Bhajani Thekas. Enjoy!

Mr.Buzz (Nov 16, 2001 03:18 p.m.):
how is tak played?

2 ways:
1) Play Ta/Na on Kinar followed by Ka on Dagga(left/Bayan/base)
2) Plat Ti( closed sound on Syahi ) followed by Ka on Dagga.

Well Mr. Buzz, I know this might be late, but a tihai is a rythymic phrase or composition repeated 3 times.

Well Mr. Buzz, I know this might be even later, but a tihai is a rythymic phrase or composition repeated 3 times, which last beat of the 3rd time is in Sam.

Very common mukhra with kaharwa is

TiDha TiraKitatakata TiraKita followed by ist matra Dha Ge na. . . .
Same mukhra could be rearranged
TiraKitatakataTirakita Dhati. .

Cheeers!!
