Hi

On the "The Tabla Legacy of Taranath Rao: Panava Tala Prajna" book there is on page 28 tintal section it says

Misra Jati means 7 pulses to the mhatra(or multiple of 7). Although a rela is normally played as a theme, sequence of variations, and a thiyya, this example only presents the theme as an exercise.

Rela:Misra Jati

TAGI TIT KIT TAGI NAGI TINA GINA

TAGI TIT KIT T'K T'K TIT KIT

As you can see there are what I think 14 matras 7 for each line. If that is so, how is it possible that this is a composition for tintal ? when there are 14 matras and not 16 ? or is a single matra what I think the khulli or mundi is?
Can any one help?

cheers
Rod

7 beats per measure meaning you play 1/2 or all of the rela within 1 beat of teental. thats the basic understanding but say you start with slow teental and can fit the whole rela into one beat , then you double the speed of teental and fit half the rela into one beat, then you double the speed of teental again fitting half the rela into 2 beats of teental etc. at one point you could reach 7 beats over 8 beats (half of teental ) eventually the entire composition can fit over one round of teental , in this case as you noted 14 matras over sixteen.
To elaborate think of this : repeat this phrase speaking out loud dha dhin dhin dha clapping once on the first dha, next with out changing the meter of your claps say tin tin na dhina dhina instead , if the length of time between claps does not change you could say you are speaking 7 over 4, when you break that down into writing you are going to get 1 and some percent per beat of the four but don't worry about that think of it scientifically one to a hundred beats can fit into the time span of a clap it's all in how you play it

I got it now. Have to put it into practise.
Just goes to show how important a teacher/master is when comes to playing tabla.
